Reflection 26 – Week 18: There Is No Good or Bad, Only Work

Health & Safety, Reflections, Weekly Round Up

It has been a full and energising week for the team. We had site tours, training, planning and, of course, plenty of conversations. One theme that kept coming up was the four pillars of Stoicism: courage, discipline, judgment, and wisdom.

One particular conversation centred on the idea that there is no “good” or “bad” in work, there is just work. It is our thinking that labels it as positive or negative. What feels like a negative to one person can be a positive opportunity for another. A clear example was an enforcement visit: the first reaction is often negative, loaded with apprehension or frustration. Once the dust settles and we shift from defensiveness to action, that same event can become a powerful positive, a catalyst for improvement, learning, and progress.

Let’s dive in.

Monday – Bank Holiday

Leon took some time to rest and reset with a 14‑mile trail run, bizarre to some, but a great way for him to recharge. Other team members also made the most of the Bank Holiday by spending time with family and friends. It was not all rest, run, and play though; a few key admin tasks were ticked off so we were in a strong position on the starting blocks for Tuesday.

Tuesday – Building the Picture

We started the week by delivering a bespoke health and safety awareness session for a client, followed by part one of a site gap-analysis and intelligence-gathering tour for a new client. Part two, at another site, is scheduled for later in the week. Part three, consideration and report writing, is planned for next week, with part four, delivery and next steps, to follow.

We also visited a new client’s manufacturing facility to discuss a proposed change of use, making sure new associated hazards are identified and that suitable risk control measures are planned in from the outset.

Elsewhere, the team supported another client with project planning for a tricky fence installation on a quayside, helping them think through the practicalities and risks before work begins.

Wednesday – Values and Skills in Focus

Day one of an SSSTS course was completed on behalf of one of our partners, MS Associates, expertly led by Leon. SSSTS is a CITB-accredited course aimed at site supervisors and first-line managers, building their competence in health and safety legislation, risk assessment, and day-to-day supervisory responsibilities on construction sites. As an aside, there is an interesting podcast doing the rounds on the leadership and future of CITB, linked to the new Industrial Training Levy (Construction Industry Training Board) Order 2026, which enables CITB to continue raising a statutory levy to fund industry training across 2026–2028. This will be the subject of a separate newsletter and editorial in due course. For the pod, follow: https://share.transistor.fm/s/fe82b110.

Two site tours were also conducted. The first was at Porton Down, supporting the continuation of phased portacabin deconstruction and clearance at the science and defence technology campus near Salisbury in Wiltshire. The second was in Basingstoke, where a great conversation unfolded around personal and company-wide values and culture, and how to navigate the day-to-day demands of site management while staying true to those shared principles.

Thursday – Empowered to Make Change

Day two of the SSSTS course was completed, and we are delighted to confirm that everyone passed. More importantly, the delegates left feeling empowered to make change rather than just tick a box.

We also spent the day on site for a client, chairing two contractor health and safety coordination meetings and holding a focused conversation with the carpentry production team. It was a busy day for the team, balancing training close to home with a site day further afield, alongside ongoing support functions such as SSiP client updates and continued development of safe systems of work.

Friday – Adapting and Clearing the Decks

It was an office administration day for Lee, while Leon was out visiting clients and associates were busy supporting other clients. Phew! Into the detail: Leon met new clients, delivering the results of a previous desktop gap analysis for one, and completing part two of Tuesday’s site gap analysis for another, ahead of next week’s planned analysis and proposed action plan.

Adaptation was the theme for Lee. The day’s original focus, finalising a client’s new ISO 9001 management system ahead of their forthcoming stage one audit was deliberately postponed to Monday, creating space to clear the desk, inbox, and mind so next week can start with clarity and control. Mission accomplished.

Closing Thought – Stoic Virtues, Everyday Work

Coordination conversations were also had with associates and clients. The working week is complete and our objectives largely achieved. Seen through a Stoic lens, none of these days were “good” or “bad” in themselves; they simply presented different tasks, pressures, and opportunities. What made the difference was how we met them: with courage in training rooms and on sites, wisdom in our planning and gap analyses, discipline in clearing decks and following through, and justice in how we support clients, associates, and each other.

As we move into Week 19, perhaps the most useful question is not “What kind of week will it be?” but “How will we choose to show up for the work in front of us?”
