We had some good discussions with various people this week as we toured sites, carried out compliance tours, attended site meetings, and engaged virtually via Teams. One thread stood out: our perception of the best day. For us, there is only one day, so today has to be the best day.
We focus on what is within our control today, we accept what is not, and measure a “good day” by our ability to engage with the present rather than by ideal outcomes.
Let’s dive in.
Monday — Team Away Day
We headed north to Woburn to spend the day with the project team, carrying out a site compliance tour and assisting with the development of systems and the formulation of a safe system of work for a new element of the project. This involved an overnight stay for one of the team and a train and bike ride for another. We put the time between to good use, ensuring that we were fully prepared for the day. Back at base, we continued with essential business administration functions and client support.
Tuesday — Classroom
We were back in the classroom for day four of the SMSTS course on behalf of MS Associates. Knowledge is being shared and management skills are being developed. We were also active for a client team for the day, with a mix of manufacturing process checks, conversations, and attendance at a pre-start meeting in the afternoon for a fencing project nearly 2km in length. The team took a few minutes to check out E-Gee, the LCS electric bike; a great way to navigate this site. Away from the classroom and site, we picked up Monday’s intelligence from the team day to complete the safe system of work documents and continue to develop the systems, particularly around temporary works.
Wednesday — Site Tours
The team headed east and west for site tours and attendance at the first progress meeting, providing CDM support to the client’s design team. Two very different projects, but with a common heritage thread. We also conducted a very different type of compliance inspection at an outdoor ski slope and leisure facility on our doorstep and held a Teams catch-up regarding progress towards the Stage 2 ISO 9001 certification audit. It was good to witness the progress being made.
Thursday — Office Day
Thursday is our traditional office-based day, ensuring that we check in with all team members, provide the required support, and stay informed of the various works in progress. This is a good place to pause and reflect, ensuring we are striving to continuously improve our delivery to clients and assist our team. Aside from our team catch-ups, we continued conversations with various clients and provided the support required.
Friday — Go West!
A short day for Lee as he heads off for an extended weekend to celebrate a milestone birthday with his family. There is not enough room on the cake for all the candles, and it is not a small cake! Other members of the team continued in Lee’s absence, carrying out a site compliance inspection and continuing to provide support of various kinds to our clients.
Closing Thought
The best day is not always the easiest, quietest, or most predictable. It is the day we are in; the one where we can prepare well, support others, learn from what is in front of us, and keep moving forward with purpose. This week reminded us that progress is often built through simple, consistent actions: good conversations, careful planning, practical support, and a willingness to stay present.
