Reflection 27 — Privilege and Support

Health & Safety, Management Systems, Reflections, Weekly Round Up

A varied week for the LCS team; client team days, project support, site compliance tours, and continued development of management systems, among other activities. Stuart was in London early in the week and reflected on privilege, recognising the importance of carrying gratitude, empathy, and compassion into the workplace. He also highlighted that awareness of others’ experiences should shape how we work with and support one another.

This links neatly to the question posed in last week’s reflection: what does “offering a helping hand” look like in your workplace? Stuart’s reflection gives that question real meaning.

Let’s dive in.

Monday — Systems and Support

Team day with PC Flooring Ltd at their new facility in Poole, developing systems to capture data and convert it into usable output to drive continuous improvement. We also continued to assist our clients’ teams with the development of their project-specific planning requirements.

Tuesday — Health, Welfare and Progress

We were active in the classroom, leading day three of the SMSTS course on behalf of MS Associates. Health and welfare were the subject for the day; health being possibly the poor relation to safety, as the effects can be undetected for years and irreversible, whereas adverse safety outcomes can, at times, be dramatic and immediate. We also had another full and engaging day on site, with an early start to be fully prepared to take part in the bi-monthly progress meeting and work with the management and site team.

Wednesday — Compliance and Development

The team were back out on site for two site compliance tours for Birchen Construction. The first project is gathering pace as the substructure element progresses to ground floor, while the second, an office fit-out, is nearing completion. We were also office-based, focusing on the development of a new management system and other client project support.

Thursday — Planning, Systems and Site Support

Thursday is our scheduled check-in with Sinead, where we look ahead to the specifics of the next week to ensure our targets for the month are on track, or to decide upon any shifts needed to match changing requirements. We continued with the development of the client management system, making good use of the Monday.com platform to house the system and track its development. We were also back on site, this time on the Isle of Wight for a planned compliance tour. Good to see the superstructure advancing.

Friday — Coordination and Catch-up

Desk-based for the team, undertaking the regular client CDM coordination effort for a local authority Principal Designer team, developing a H&S file for a single-trade client, holding an associate catch-up to agree next week’s targets, and more.

Closing thought

Privilege is not always about having an easy path; sometimes it is about recognising the support, opportunities, and stability that help us move forward. In the workplace, offering a helping hand can mean sharing knowledge, making time for others, noticing when someone needs support, or using our experience to make the path clearer for those around us. Gratitude, empathy, and compassion are not abstract values; they are practical behaviours that help build safer, healthier, and more supportive teams.
