Reflection 26 – Week 9: The Light Returns

Health & Safety, Reflections, Weekly Round Up

“We exist in a hostile world, suspended between life and death.  Our efforts, therefore, should be focused on each moment as they unfold.”

Can you believe it, March already! Spring is on the way, and a glimpse of what’s to come was definitely felt by our team this week.  With daffodils in bloom, there’s a reassuring sense that the days are stretching out, and with that comes more sunlight and a little extra vitamin D for our small patch of this “pale blue dot.”

March has started just as February ended, no, not another week off for Lee! but with enthusiasm and vigour for what we do.  It’s been a mixed week of site compliance tours, nights out, team days, Teams meetings, connections, rewarding conversations, and more.

To Our Week of Tours, Connections & Conversations

For one of the team, the week began early with a drive to Bedfordshire, refreshed and ready for a Monday morning start. The task: assist in reviewing subcontractor safe systems of work to spot potential performance gaps and advise on improvement solutions.  Soon one became two as another team member joined to review the temporary works arrangements, supporting continual improvement.  A good, productive day.

The dynamic duo left site together, heading for the train via a supercharger, one bound for Henley-on-Thames, the other continuing by train to central London, both prepared for the next day’s site compliance tours and a team day.  By planning our weeks geographically, we combine efforts and improve efficiency across client support. (The Tesla returned over 5 miles/kWh, most impressive!)

Midweek brought more activity: resuming our CDM advisory role for a local authority partner, followed by site visits in Portsmouth and Porton Down.  Later, a Teams catch-up with another client to update ISO 9001 development progress and hear how their awareness training was received.

As the week accelerated toward Friday, our dynamic duo reunited for a client team day.  As always, we greeted the senior leadership team before heading to the joinery and fabrication shops, the heartbeat of the business.  What a privilege it is to have open, honest conversations with skilled craftspeople.  In the joiners’ shop, an experienced joiner, over 45 years with our client, shared insights only decades of hands-on skill can produce.

Next, in fabrication, we met the shop manager and his young apprentice.  Watching the apprentice’s pride as he described completing a run of loop-top railings from a drawing was inspiring. “How does that make you feel?” we asked. His simple, confident reply said it all: “Impressed.”  A powerful reminder of what meaningful work can do for confidence and craft.

To another shop, we heard great feedback on a new hearing protection system, considered a real game changer by team member.  We wrapped up by rejoining the leadership group for fruitful discussions around continual improvement and system development.

Friday arrived before we knew it!  A quieter, administrative day, catching up on emails, Teams meetings, and developing a quality management system for a new client.  We also researched ‘golden thread’ software solutions to better track and manage H&S Files and O&M Manuals for both current and future clients.

Lee even managed a lunch meeting with the one and only Mr Andrew Bishop, speaking on wellbeing in the industry and how we can support our clients’ teams and beyond.  As we like to say, culture is the elixir of wellbeing.  True leadership at every level foster’s ownership, accountability, and positive change.

Closing Thought

As the light returns, we are reminded that every conversation, every journey, every visit, each is its own moment unfolding.  From daffodils to data, from workshop floor to boardroom table, our work connects people, purpose, and progress.  In a world that can often feel hostile, perhaps these small, meaningful moments are the best proof that life’s balance lies in attention, to craft, to connection, and to each other.
