Reflection 29 — Someone Say Birthday!

This week marked a significant milestone birthday for one of our principals. We couldn’t find a cake big enough for all the candles. Lee certainly made the most of the moment, perhaps a little too much! Celebrations carried on from a weekend in Cornwall with family to a surprise rendition of Happy Birthday (and yet another cake) with the New Forest Fencing team.

Alongside the celebrations, it was business as usual. The team continued supporting our clients with their compliance needs and duties, from site tours and classroom delivery to system development and advisory work.

Monday — Man Down

With one of the team travelling back from the West Country, the rest were engaged in a site compliance tour on a new-build, unique dwelling, neatly positioned between a river and a canal. The day also included ongoing system development and general compliance advice.

Tuesday — Classroom

After a few days away, it was a catch-up day in the office, emails, planning, and organising the week ahead. We were back in the classroom delivering the final day of the CITB SMSTS course on behalf of our partners, MS Associates. The result: a 100% pass rate across all delegates, well done all.

Wednesday — Client-Facing Day

We returned to New Forest Fencing for our regular weekly visit, supporting the team with a wide range of compliance matters and system development. It is always a productive and enjoyable day, made even better with a birthday singalong for Lee.
In parallel, we carried out a site compliance tour at a local theatre, undertook CDM client coordination duties, and continued developing client systems while providing ongoing advice.

Thursday — Flip-Flop Adaptation

The week looked set for a predictable finish, until it did not. Following a phone call the previous day, plans were rapidly adapted to meet emerging needs while maintaining progress on scheduled activities. This included attending our weekly virtual team meeting to ensure planning for the following week remained on track.

Friday — Mixed Day

Friday continued in a similar unscripted fashion, balancing reactive work with planned commitments. Activities included a site compliance tour, provision of professional advice, and essential administrative tasks. These ranged from scheduling next week’s site visits and coordinating team availability, to securing a venue for our monthly meeting and responding to earlier proposals as projects begin to mobilise on site.

Closing Thought – Recalibration

Weeks like this are a reminder that structure is essential, but adaptability is invaluable. In construction and compliance, the plan will rarely unfold exactly as expected. The real measure lies in how effectively you respond, recalibrate, and continue to deliver without compromising standards.
